Every month, Junior League of Champaign-Urbana members visit the Don Moyer Boys and Girls Club to teach healthy eating and cooking skills to kids in our community. This project, Kids in the Kitchen (KITK), is one of the many exciting ways that JLCU is supporting families in our area. Since the start of the Junior League year in September, KITK has held four events, each on the first Thursday of the month. The children spend time learning a new recipe and nutrition, and then participate in a fun physical activity, usually with special guests.
Approximately 60 children attend Kids in the Kitchen each month, which means up to 240 contacts received healthy eating and physical activity tips just since September. The opportunity to teach and learn is one of the highlights for leaders and volunteers. Meghan Fisher, the Committee Chair for KITK, reports, “they (the children) love being involved in the kitchen and making healthy snacks. They learn about following a recipe and taking turns, get to taste and smell new ingredients, and their favorite part – to eat the actual food!”

Meghan states, “in December we made energy bites. These are always a hit with staff, volunteers, and the kids – maybe because this recipe has some chocolate in it.”
